Experience at Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice

The origin behind the name is certainly interesting, and you can read all about it, being plastered on the side wall as you head over to the corner unit housing the latest (as of December 8 2022) branch of the Beach Road Curry Rice Franchise.

Famous for the use of scissors as both cutting implement and a makeshift tong, the reason for this choice of tool was due to the gang wars at the time of its founding. With Cleavers being a common weapon for gangs, the owner decided to use scissors instead. Soon the distinctive clink as ingredients were snipped into bite-sized chunks became the hallmark of the brand.

Fans of the brand will immediately recognise the classics such as the pork chop, fried shrimp, and braised cabbage. Other dishes include brinjal, fried anchovies, and fried fish. The dishes laid out rotates over the course of the day, so expect to find different dishes popping up when you head down.

Breakfast sets are available, together with the usual coffeeshop drinks. A meal with one meat and two vegetables will set you back around $5, which is pretty standard. Of course the price will go up sharply if you go for the premium items such as the Sambal Sotong or load up your plate with the various meat dishes.

2 meat ($4) + 1 veg ($1.2) + 1 egg($0.8) + rice ($0.8) = $6.80

Besides the use of scissors, Singapore’s curry rice is known for its dousing of sauces over the plate. Two main sauces are used: a sweeter, less spicy curry, and a glutinous lor bak braising gravy. However an additional two sauces are also laded over the dish as a secret sauce. The staff remained mum about what goes into them beyond acting as a base for the flavour of the dish. Regardless, the flavours they brought blended into the sticky amalgamation of savoury goodness.
