Overview
Burgers come in all shapes and sizes. From commercial hockey puck-shaped patties with an equivalent density, to sloppy burgers drowning in sauce.
One Fattened Calf’s select range of burgers deliver on all fronts. Ranging from the classic no-frills burger to the butterburger, reminiscing of Singapore’s kaya toast: featuring two slabs of cold butter between the buns.
Seating is limited there, and with their high popularity, be expected to squeeze through customers devouring burgers to find your seat. If the place is maxed out, you may even find yourself right by the oven behind the counter where extra seats are hidden. The hole-in-the-wall churns out burgers, so they are served fresh in a prompt fashion directly to you.
All burger combos come with a fries and a drink. Add-ons are also available with the options of beef patty ($8), extra cheese ($1), and or extra tomato ($1). The truffle fries and cheese fries cost an additional $2.50 when ordered with the combo.
Burgers
Of the five burgers available, I have not tried the original OFC burger ($15) nor the Impossible burger ($20). I would assume the OFC burger, being the cheeseburger without the cheese, would be almost as good, and perfect for people who do not like or cannot eat dairy products.
OFC Cheeseburger ($15 / $19.90 combo)
Replace the tomatoes on the OFC burger with cheddar cheese and you get the cheeseburger. The cheeseburger at OFC is a simple burger done well. Comprising of pickles, a potato bun, 150g of grassfed beef, a blend of charred and fresh red onions, and their special sauce. No blue cheese, beetroot, or other strong flavours to build or mask the taste of the beef.
The burgers at OFC use a potato bun, similar to that of Shake Shack. While not as sinful as the butter and egg filled, borderline pastry brioche, potato buns have a richer taste and lighter texture compared to your standard loaf. I particularly enjoyed the patty. Not over-worked, and packed just firmly enough to hold its structural integrity when you bite down into it, releasing the umami goodness. The sauce and onions supplement the experience without compromising on the lightly seasoned patty. Sinking my teeth into it allowed me to taste the quality of the beef.
Fans of no-frills burgers will find no fault with this choice.
OFC Butterburger ($15 / $19.90 combo)
Swap out the cheese and sauce with two slabs of unsalted grass-fed butter and you get the butterburger, only available when dining in. The butter melts and act as the sauce for the burger, providing a more luscious mouthfeel. The richness of it layers over the rest of the burger, making it a decadent experience.
The pickles help cut through the amount of fat present in this burger, but be prepared for an outpouring of grease as the butter melts.
OFC Goldburger ($18 / $22.90 combo)
Take the OFC cheeseburger, add the OFC’s house-special pulled beef brisket and you get the Goldburger. The sweet and tender brisket acted like a meat jam, melding with the special sauce coating the patty beneath. If you are looking for a kick in your tastebuds with overwhelming depth, this is the burger of choice.
Sides at One Fattened Calf
Three variations of fries are available at OFC,
- OFC Truffle Fries
- OFC Cheese Fries, with extra cheese sauce available at $2.50
- OFC Fries
The cheese fries come slathered in nacho cheese. A thick creamy cheese sauce which does not offend. Sprinkled heavily atop the pile of fries and cheese is a coat of paprika, lending it a smokey flavour.
A fridge stocked with assorted soft drinks and mineral water is available to quench your thirst or you can opt for the OFC golden Lime Slushie, going for $4.90.
