Overview

Its extensive menu lists several different sets, from $7.50 to the pricier Unagi set at $11. As the chef used to work at Nirai-Kanai, an Okinawan diner that has since shifted from Liang Court to Great World City, K. K. Kitchen offers Okinawan dishes such as bitter gourd.

Bitter gourd ($5.50), lightly stir-fried with eggs, tofu, and pork belly. Contrary to its name, the bitter gourd was hardly bitter. Instead, a light savoury flavour was had, punctuated with cubes of salty pork that lent a stronger note balancing out the dish nicely.

The Agadashi Tofu ($2.50) has soft tofu lightly dusted with starch and fried. Topped with grated radish and spring onions nestled in a pool of soy sauce blended with dashi. Despite being fried, there was nary a hint of greasiness. The daikon provides a burst of freshness as a palate cleanser that went unneeded.

Salmon Shioyaki set ($8.50). I was given a larger portion of salad (which I had requested in place of the standard rice) for the delay in service. The tender salmon had a hint of salt letting the robust, buttery taste of salmon shine through. A wedge of lemon sits there, ready if you require a hit of citrus to cut through the slices of fish.

The salad is brightened up with a rich dressing that has my fitness trainer frowning in disapproval. Alongside the mains is a halved soy sauce marinated runny-yolk egg, some pickles, and a bowl of miso soup.
