Skillet By The Fat Boss Review (CLOSED)

Skillet is unfortunately closed permanently at this location.

Notes:

  • The brioche bun is structurally unsound, so I’ll recommend using a fork and knife for the hot dogs. Especially so for the wetter toppings (i.e. chilli con carne).
  • Fans of truffle would not go amiss with the mushroom soup, otherwise the french onion soup is a classic.
  • Aglio Olio, while not prepared in a traditional fashion is still a delight to eat.

Experience at Skillet by the Fat Boss

Fans of hotdogs in Yishun will be pleased with the offerings at Skillet over at Northpoint City. The rather tight 20-seater can be found near the South Wing entrance, right opposite Uniqlo and has a large menu despite its size.

Soups

French Onion Soup

Topped with small bites of bacon giving it texture as well as sudden bursts of saltiness that allow the whole serving to be devoured. A balm to the soul, the French Onion Soup ($7.90) had the right balance of sweetness from the onion and a rich broth bringing it together. Soups come served with a slice of rye bread, with the French Onion Soup’s toast having an additional layer of cheese on top.

Mains

The main courses are served up in piping hot skillets, the reason for their name. The full menu offers up a wide range of options including, but not limited to sliders, pasta, and steaks.

Skillet Stewed Chicken

The hearty Stewed Chicken paired tender chunks of chicken thigh with a medley of vegetables. Cooked to a tender consistency, you can use the dish as a dip for the accompanying bread.

Aglio Olio

The classic pasta. A Prawn Aglio Olio came with cherry tomatoes and what appears to be sliced thai red chilis for heat. Diverging from the classic red pepper flakes, this dish certainly packs more bite. With a generous amount of olive oil coating the pasta (choice of spaghetti and linguine available), the overall dish was a delight to have.

Seafood Paella

In-line with the Aglio Olio, the seafood paella will have traditionalists up in arms with the inclusion of chorizo in an otherwise seafood offering. Marked as a dish for two, mussels, clams, prawns, and squid rings are overlaid on a flavour bed of rice. The dish comes with Disappointingly, the squid was a tad tough and no socarrat (the crispy rice crust at the base) could be found.

Hot Dogs

Smoked Beef Hot dog on a brioche bun with Garlic Aioli and Onions (Caramelised and fried)

With a selection of sausages to choose from as well as weekly specials, together with your choice of one sauce and two toppings, there’s something for everyone.

I went with the smoked beef (found as a weekly special), a rich garlic aioli sauce and both types of onions (caramelised and fried). The sausage was cooked perfectly, with a snap of the skin and a juicy interior. Fan favourite Truffle Mayo is also available as an option of sauce, alongside local flavours Satay and Chilli Crab.

The range of garnishes surprised me with healthier options Celery & Carrot Pickle alongside Bonito Flakes. The full range of options can be found below.

Sausages are available as is ($5.50), with a bun ($9.90) or in a set ($11.90). The set comes with fries and a drink. Top up an additional $1 for flavoured fries.

Currently a promotion is available for people ordering the hotdogs to go.
